It became fashionable in Tuscany during the fifteenth century and subsequently its function as a seat was consecrated in France, at the court of Louis XIV. In the presence of the king, one could only sit on a chair of lower height than the throne.
The stool therefore had a ceremonial role. There are various types of stools, some models are the piece of furniture associated with a given profession: for example, that of the pianist, which provides for an adjustable one or that of the boxer, who rests on it at the corner of the ring.
